Pastor Ed Dobson preached and wrote about Jesus Christ for decades. He was even named ‘Pastor of the Year’ in 1993 by Moody Bible Institute.

However, after he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) in 2001, he decided to try living like Jesus 2000 years ago.

Dobson’s book ‘The Year of Living like Jesus’ chronicles his year of literally living like Jesus and obeying his teachings.

Dobson’s journey took him into bars, inspired him to pick up hitchhikers and deepened his understanding of other people’s suffering.

In a promotional video (below), Dobson said: “I ate Kosher, which is a pain in the neck. I observed the Sabbath, which is a pain in the neck.”

Dobson, who is still living with ASL 12 years after diagnosis, is a rare case. The average lifespan of someone with ASL is 2 to 5 years.

Dobson is currently filming a video series entitled ‘It Ain’t Over,’ which reminds people that life isn’t over even in the face of difficult news.

Dobson has come a long way since serving as a teacher at Liberty University and writing content for Jerry Falwell’s politically-conservative organization, The Moral Majority, which flourished in 1970s and 80s.

In 1987, Dobson decided that the rationale behind the Moral Majority had been wrongheaded and that many cultural problems could not be fixed through the political process.

Dobson left Liberty University and became a pastor at Calvary Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he remained for eighteen years (1987–2005).

In January 2009, Dobson said that he had voted for Barack Obama because Obama “was closer to Jesus’s teachings.”
