The Secret to Win at the Contest of Life

“And what do you do?” I asked the passenger seated beside me in the airplane.

“I’m a carving artist,” he said.

I gushed with words of admiration.

“I entered the world competition of ice carvings in Japan,” he added in his unique Filipino accent.

“Tell me…did you win?”

Well,” he said, “At first the contestants from other countries poked fun. They said, ‘Hey China man, where’s your power saw? Are you gonna use that hand chisel?’”

That’s all he had. And he began his carving on an eight-foot block of ice. He finished quicker than other contestants who used fancy power saws. And with passion to win, he carved a figure of a Filipino man cutting open a coconut and beside him, the figures of three dogs watching him. The figure was 3-dimentional, displaying every detail.

And my new friend, with hand chisel in his pocket, went home with the gold medal.

Sound familiar? We may not have powerful ways to tackle the block of adversity that freezes our world with pain. We may not have the answers. We may even lack the skill needed to make our way through the coldness of this world.

But we have the passion to follow Christ Jesus. And in that, we possess the power to win in the contest of life.

No matter what others have, we have the secret way—the chisel of faith, the tool of perseverance and the resolve to trust in His name that takes us to the gold medal of His triumph. And we then belong to the team of victorious contestants of life because “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God” (Psalm 20:7).

Father, I confess that often I have lost. In futility, I tried to use the power tools of my own human ways, abilities and wisdom to win at the game of life. Thank you for your power that brings about the winning medal of victory.
