The God Who Counts

psalm147.4

It’s been estimated that there are billions of stars in the Milky Way Galaxy and trillions upon trillions more in the Universe itself. Even with 21st century technology, these are just estimates because the Universe is vast and no human could ever uncover its wonders in a single lifetime. Yet, the Bible says that God counts the number of the stars and calls them each by name (Psalm 147:4). God knowing the number of stars is no big surprise, He created them. However, that God named each of them is astounding. It says something about God’s relationship to the creation He declared very good (Genesis 1:31). God cares for His creation, and nothing escapes His attention, not even a single tear. Even with the great testimony of Scripture, sometimes we struggle to see God in the midst of our circumstances. We question if He really knows. We question if He cares.

In another Psalm, David says, “God keeps track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book” (Psalm 56). This is incredible! God is intimately involved in the details of our lives. If we don’t charge God with ignorance or apathy; we may be tempted to say, “He’d do that for David, but not for me.” We wonder if God is working on our behalf. Sometimes a lack of seeing God acting, moves us to believe He’s not acting at all. However, can we really expect to keep track of God and all that He does? God performs miracles, but more often than not, God works through our actions and the actions of others to answer prayers and provide resolutions to many problems and situations.

The Scriptures also reveal that God counts the number of hairs on our heads (Luke 12:7, Matt. 10:30). Why would Jesus say such a thing? The context of both these passages is fear. Jesus was saying these words after commissioning His disciples to drive out demons and heal diseases. He knew they would face opposition even to the point of death. He assured them that the Father firmly held their fate in His hands. Sparrows, whom Jesus said weren’t worth much more than a penny, don’t die without the Father’s consent. He makes it clear that God is Sovereign and He is in control even when it doesn’t seem like it. We need not fear or be anxious.

Whether we think God literally counts and names the stars, bottles tears, and numbers the hairs on our heads; God is enthusiastically involved in His creation. Jesus’ incarnation proves it! Pain, Jesus experienced it. Loneliness and betrayal, Jesus experienced that too. If we are tempted to forget how involved God is in the details of our life; we don’t have to go very far to see that God did not sit aloof and inactive in heaven. He came not only to comfort us through our pain, but also to live as one of us and to defeat it. Just read through the Gospels; Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection pulsates through each of them.

But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. – Luke 12:7
