The Faces of Courage and God’s Promise on Veterans Day

‘Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.’    Joshua 1:6

Today is Veterans Day in the U.S. The day will be filled with parades and other celebrations, honoring those who have served and who serve today in our military. Many cities and towns will host festivities to honor the fallen, and to show appreciation for those who daily put their lives on the line for our freedoms.

The fight for freedom was begun many years ago. God ordained that His people should fight for their lands, many times over. He could have just swept his hand over it, or spoken His wishes out loud, and the land would have been pure and spotless, with no fighting, no blood shed.

But God also knew that mankind needs to be a part of the process. If we truly want to have the promise of God, to have our inheritance of the land He promised to our forefathers, then we must take ownership of that promise. It is, after all, ours. He gave it to us. And, I have to tell you, if you do not already know (and I think you do!), the promises made in the Bible, yes, back in ‘the day’, are promises that have been handed down to us, over and over again, and are just as binding today as they were all those thousands of years ago. And God is just as faithful.

We all fight for our country in different ways. Some of us join up with the armed forces; some are political, either actively or by voting based on informed choice; some (hopefully all of us) pray, and seek God’s wisdom in all things first and foremost. And, of course, there are those who do all of those things.

If we truly love our God and country, then we will participate in the preservation of our freedoms in some way. But we must thank our God first, and our military men and women, no matter where they are serving, no matter their branch of service, no matter their jobs in that service, for their courage, their willingness to stand for what
they and we believe in, and for their strength for the battles they will face today and in the days ahead.

So when you are taking part today in public festivities, or even if  you are only taking time for private remembrances, don’t forget what it is really all about….God’s promise, and people’s courage throughout the ages, to stand, to fight, to conquer, and to preserve our Christian way of life, with His hand leading the way.

Thank God. And thank any military person or family you know or encounter for their willingness to serve this country that we all love
