Glass Wings

Job 42:2-6 – You asked, Who is this that obscures my counsel without knowledge? Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me. You said, Listen now, and I will speak; I will question you, and you shall answer me. My ears have heard of You but now my eyes have seen You. Therefore, I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes. (NIV)

Until recently, I had never heard of the glass wing butterfly, which is native to Central America and Mexico. The beautiful, transparent wings of these amazing little creatures look like glass mirrors and reflect the setting and wonderful backdrop of their surroundings.

Contemplating my new discovery, I turned to my favorite chapters of Job, from 38 through 40, in which the Lord challenges Job to explain the various wonders of His creation. All creatures, from the least to the greatest, display the mystery of God’s glory and wisdom. His majestic involvement is evident in everything He has made, and by His goodness, He is the sustainer of all life.

Days after learning about the glass wing butterfly, I also heard of a rare flower grown in Thailand known as the Parrot Flower. This rare species, resembling a parrot in flight, is yet another unique expression of the greatness of our Creator and Lord. Who but God could design such a perfect and rich variety of beauty throughout our natural world?

Like Job, I, too, realize that God’s awesome creation is way beyond my understanding. Therefore, I am in no position to argue on any subject with the Almighty, since words without knowledge are utterly meaningless. The apostle Paul illustrates a similar sentiment in 1 Corinthians 13:12 – “Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.” (NIV)
If glass wings enable us to glimpse the wisdom and glory of God in the mystery of the magnitude and the awesome wonders of His creation, so then, may we also follow the example of Job and humbly submit to our Maker, being mindful not to obscure His wise counsel by carelessly speaking words without knowledge.

Prayer: Father, with wisdom, You have opened the gates of heaven, and the whole earth sparkles with Your glory. Cleanse our hearts of sin and pride that we may worship Your majesty in the spirit of truth. Help us in humility to surrender our lives into Your loving care. Keep us mindful of Your greatness and sovereignty throughout this wonderful world that Your hands have made. We thank You for the honor and privilege of knowing You personally through the revelation of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in whose blessed and holy name we pray. Amen.
