A Blue Moon and Uncommon Changes

“But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.”
Matthew 10: 29–32

New Year’s Eve this year featured a beautiful blue moon overlooking earth as its inhabitants spent the evening celebrating and looking with hope toward the coming year; one with hopefully more jobs and less homelessness. A blue moon is a rather rare occurrence and seemed to be the perfect symbol to welcome in 2010. With the teetering economy and many signs pointing toward Jesus’ imminent return, this uncommon sight should remind us to go beyond our common lives and immerse ourselves in our spiritual lives in the coming year.

While losing weight and exercising more are among the physical changes commonly listed at the top of people’s lists of New Year’s resolutions, spiritual changes are critically needed to help us prepare for the coming year as well. If you have a perfect relationship with the Lord and spend a lot of time in prayer and Bible study and are always positive, then you are very blessed and a strong child of God!

For the rest of us, life often times seems to spin us around like the teacups at Disney World and it is easy to be distracted by the stresses of life and lose our focus on God. The devil is sneaky and likes nothing better then to keep us from a relationship with God and he knows our weaknesses and our distractions.

So I encourage you to put a high priority on working toward drawing closer to the Lord in the coming year. While making physical improvements such as to stop smoking or get more exercise is important, make prayer and Bible study more than just something you do “once in a blue moon” when you have some free time! The implications of these types of resolutions are eternal – and what can be better than spending time with the Creator who loves you so much that He knew you before you were born and even knows how many hairs are on your head? So no matter what the coming year brings, you don’t have to be afraid – the Lord loves you with an everlasting love.
