March 1: Most Precious Faith

March 1_goldAA tried faith is more precious than pure gold.  Gold is the most valuable, pure, useful, and durable of all metals.  Peter is comparing gold to faith…the most valuable, pure, useful and durable of virtues that we possess.

“That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:7)

Putting our faith to the test…what is Peter talking about?  He’s talking about that which is more precious than gold…the trials, the tests, the fire for it is through the testing that our faith is shown to be genuine!

The trial of our faith is much more precious than the trial of gold.  In both there is purification, separation, and a test of its soundness and goodness.  Unlike faith, gold will actually decrease in volume during its purification process through fire.  Unlike gold, faith is established, improved and multiplied through the fiery trials.  Eventually gold will perish, but faith never will.

The Lord looks at trials in our lives as a means to purify us and bring us closer to Him.  Although our faith is daily assaulted and tried by afflictions and temptations, it is much more precious than gold, and brings praise, glory and honor to the Father as we submit to the purifying fire.

We don’t like the fire, the trials, the tests, but one thing is certain…they are a necessary part of our faith as we are purified for His glory. 1 Corinthians 10:13 gives us a promise we can cling to: “…but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”

We can be confident of two things:  (1) That our trials will purify us producing in us the fruit of righteousness; and (2) that we have a promise that He will make a way for us to go through it.  Let us all learn to embrace the fire, submit to its refining process, and thereby glorify God as our faith is purified day after day.

Lord, teach me to embrace the afflictions and temptations in my life as my faith is tested and challenged. No matter what it takes, purify my faith as gold in the midst of the Refiner’s Fire, amen.

“Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.” (1 Peter 4:12-13)
