Making it Through the Storm (For Real)

The story about Jesus sleeping on the boat during a storm (Matthew 8:23-27, Mark 4:36-41 and Luke 8:22-25) is well known.  There is even a song about it (“Peace, Be Still”).  But do we really study the Scriptures to know what the story means?

I did during a real storm.  A hurricane.

In August 2011, I was supposed to be going out of town, but to do so would take me right into Hurricane Irene.   So, I waited for her to come to me in Richmond, Va.

From my time of living in the Midwest, I know about Midwest storms.  The tornadoes and snowstorms were still fresh in my mind.  But a hurricane is different.  It seems to linger and bring so much rain and wind.

I prayed as I hunkered down to prepare for Hurricane Irene, then I gravitated to my Bible and the story about how Jesus was asleep on the boat during a storm. I knew the story, but it became real for me.

If Jesus was confident enough to sleep during a storm while he was on a boat, why couldn’t I be confident I would make it through the hurricane OK in a house away from coastal water?   Why couldn’t I sleep through the storm?

We are more than conquerors through Christ (Romans 8:37).  I decided that I would show my faith in God by sleeping through the storm.  And God showed his faithfulness by protecting me and my household.  No one was hurt and we didn’t lose power.  We found out others were hurt, some died and thousands lost power.

So now, when the choir sings about going through the storm and the rain, I can sayAmen!”

Editor’s Note: Hurricane Irene, the first major hurricane of 2011, caused 45 deaths and between $5 billion and $7 billion in damages. More than 300,000 residents were evacuated from low-lying coastal areas. (Source: http://mceer.buffalo.edu/infoservice/disasters/Hurricane-Irene-2011.asp)
