JournEzine’s Eleventh Annual Christmas Story Contest: King
It’s that time of the year again and we hope you’re as excited as we are as we begin JournEzine’s Eleventh Annual Christmas Story Competition! This contest is a meaningful and fun way for authors of all ages, from all walks of life, and at all levels of accomplishment to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Join in the celebration by participating; there will prizes and exposure for the winners as well as a PDF file of all entries made available for download at the conclusion of the competition.
We are currently accepting entries. All submissions must be received by midnight December 16th, 2016. Barring any unforeseen delays, winners will be announced on December 22nd, 2016. Please feel free to submit as many entires as you like. Have fun but … please follow the rules!
The theme this year is simply “KING“. While you are encouraged to be as creative as you like with your entry, every submission will be rated by assigning a numerical value between 1 and 5 for each of the criteria outlined below. Neither the author’s name nor any other identifying information is revealed to the judges; they rate each entry based on its own merit alone.
As you write, please keep in mind the following criteria which will be the basis for judging each entry:
- How well did the entry fit the topic?
- How well-crafted was the entry?
- How creative was the entry?
- How well did the entry begin?
- Did the entry come to a satisfying conclusion?
- How well did the entry work within its own genre (i.e. poetry, fiction, devotion, etc.)?
- How well did the entry connect with or involve the reader?
A panel of independent judges will read each entry and, using a pre-programmed tally sheet, submit their opinions by our deadline. All tally sheets will then be combined to determine the final winners. The judges will not have contact with the other judges, so all entries will be rated separately by each individual judge without outside influence.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the top 3 entries and honorable mentions awarded to the top 5 runner-ups. Please watch JournEzine for prize details.
Your winning story should be written and submitted prior to midnight (EST) December 16th.
Winners will be announced on Thursday, December 22, 2016.
You may submit as many entries as you like as long as they are your personal original work (no forwards or copies of others’ work will be allowed).
Your entry must be no less than 300 and no more than 1,000 words in length; please use a word-counter to help you stay within your limit. Any entry outside the word limit will be automatically disqualified.
Please email your entry (or entries) as attachments to an email addressed to us at this special address: email@example.com. DO NOT send your entries to Jeanice (or Jan) directly. Please use this specific email address. Thank you!
Your entry must be presented in final form, proofread, and ready for publication in .DOC or .DOCX format. If you do not have access to Microsoft Office, please submit your entry in .TXT format (please note that your text enhancements will not appear if submitted in this format).
Please DO NOT include your entry in the body of an email as this creates many challenges during the publishing process; doing so will automatically disqualify your entry/entries.
Because this is a Christian ministry, your entry must reflect Christian principles and in some way point to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
Please help us by including the following information with your submission:* Full name* Mailing Address* Phone Number* Email Address* Short Bio (under 75 words) with or without your contact info (your choice) and attach a picture of yourself, if possible. Note that your bio should be written in third person.* Link to your website and/or blog, if applicable.
Please be sure to edit your story (or stories) and your submission is in publishable form. We will not do any editing on competition entries; they will be presented to the judges and published exactly as received. No exceptions.
Submissions will be automatically disqualified if the above rules are not followed. If you have questions, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you.
While “KING” is the theme for this year’s competition, we are excited to see how your entry will convey the most important message sent to mankind through the advent of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Of course, the birth of Jesus Christ was according to God’s divine plan – not just to give us another holiday to celebrate, but because He loved mankind (His creation) so much that He devised a plan of redemption for fallen man. He loves us that much! Let’s give God the glory for His fulfilled plan in the birth, life, ministry, death, resurrection and ascension of the only begotten Son of God this Christmas. Write as if you desire to inspire the readers with the true meaning of Christmas, unveiling the mystery of God’s plan.
By submitting your story, you affirm that you allow JournEzine to share your story as JournEzine and HGIM deem appropriate. Also you affirm that you release to Heart of God International Ministries the rights to publish your entry as the content relates to this competition.
We have independent judges who will read your story (or stories) anonymously; your name and contact information will be removed before submitting the entries to them for judging. We affirm there will be no favoritism—each entry will stand on its own merit and judged according to the criteria detailed above.
So, get started writing! Don’t delay another day … and, be sure to share this competition with your writing friends and associates. We’re anxious to read what is on your heart this Christmas!
