Good News

The theme this year is “GOOD NEWS“.  Using the following scriptures, we challenge you to create the winning story (true or fiction) which helps to communicate the heart of this Christmas season based on our GOOD NEWS theme.

An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” (Luke 2:9-14)

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this. (Isaiah 9:6-7)

While you are encouraged to be as creative as you like with your entry, every submission will be rated by assigning a numerical value between 1 and 5 for each of the following 7 criteria.  Author’s names or any other identifying information are not revealed to the judges; they rate each entry based on its own merit alone.

A panel of independent judges will read each entry and, using a pre-programmed tally sheet, submit their opinions by our deadline.  All judges’ tally sheets will then be combined to determine the final winners.  The judges will not have contact with the other judges, so all entries will be rated separately by each individual judge without outside influence.

As you write, please keep in mind the following criteria which will be the basis for judging each entry:

  • How well did the entry fit the topic?
  • How well crafted was the entry?
  • How creative was the entry?
  • How well did the entry begin?
  • Did the entry come to a satisfying conclusion?
  • How well did the entry work within its own genre (i.e. poetry, fiction,
    devotion etc)?
  • How well did the entry connect with or involve the reader?

Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 entries and honorable mentions awarded to the top 7 runner-ups. Details of the exciting prizes are soon to be announced.

Your winning story should be written and submitted prior to midnight (CST) December 14th.

Winners will be announced on Wednesday, December 21st.

Please email your entry (or entries) as attachments to an email addressed to  Your entry must be presented in final form, proofread, and ready for publication in .DOC or .DOCX format(read the terms and guidelines for submissions below.  Please DO NOT include your entry in the body of an email as this creates many challenges during the publishing process.
