I Really Want a Meek Coat!

“…but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.”
1 Peter 3:4, ESV

I’ve been shopping around for a meek coat, because I know I will look precious in the right one. Don’t you think? It all started when the Lord led me to desire one.

As the verse says, “Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” (Ps. 37:4). This summer, as I was relearning the discipline of delighting myself in the LORD, He began to develop my desire for meekness. So I’ve been on the hunt…in His Word. I’ve asked Him to teach me and show me what it looks like, and He’s doing just that.

I love one of the definitions I came across on Meekness: “an attitude of humble, submissive and expectant trust in God, and a loving, patient and gentle attitude toward others.” Amen. My heart’s prayer.

One of my favorite descriptions of what a meek person looks like came from a sermon entitled Blessed Are the Meek by John Piper. He said (based on Psalm 37),

“meek people are quiet or still before the Lord and wait patiently for him. First, they discover that God can be trusted. Then, second, they commit their way to him. And then, third, they wait patiently in stillness for the work of God in their lives.

This doesn’t mean they become lazy. It means that they’re free of frenzy. They have a kind of steady calm that comes from knowing that God is omnipotent, that he has their affairs under his control, and that he is gracious and will work things out for the best. Meek people have a quiet steadiness about their lives in the midst of upheaval.”

I look forward not only to further study in God’s Word on meekness (it’s a broader study than I ever realized), but also the development of it in my life as I trust and obey the Lord to do the work in His time and in His way. I know it won’t be easy, because I’m prideful and impatient, easily distracted, and prone to chatter more than listen…but I want to be meek more than I want life to be easy. The Lord knows I am poor and needy, but He takes thought for me. He is my help and my deliverer (Psalm 40:17).

“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,” Colossians 3:12, ESV

I’ve been writing, leading worship, performing, directing and acting in front of audiences since childhood.  Recently, God has called me to use the gifts He’s given me to speak to Christian women.  I like to mix my life experiences–the big, the small, the great and the ugly–along with a bit of dramatic humor, in order to show how the Lord has been up close and personal in my life each step of the way.

Whether it’s diapering babies, taxying teens, being a church volunteer, trying to make sense of the marriage thing, or overcoming strongholds and struggles (past or present), I hope to communicate God’s largeness through it all.
