Joseph Looks Back

I thought to put her aside
Our betrothal to quietly end
I wondered why she’d lied
My heart she could not mend

An angel then appeared
In a dream he told me ‘no’
It isn’t what you’ve feared
With Mary you should go

So I took her as my wife
But lie with her did not
Her womb was full of life
A tiny growing tot

To Bethlehem we went
A census soon was due
We did not know right then
The baby’s birth was too

No room the keepers cried
The inns are full to burst
The pains in Mary’s side
Confirmed the very worst

A stable soon was loaned
The home to lambs and sheep
Poor Mary lay and moaned
Her agony was deep

A star rose high above
The baby birthed with pain
The stable filled with love
Christ in a manger lain

The angel choir rejoiced
The shepherds came to see
Their adoration voiced
To Mary’s baby wee

Then later came the kings
With myrrh and solid gold
And frankincense and things
And confidence so bold

I had a dream one night
The baby’s death was sought
Our only choice was flight
The other options naught

To Egypt we did go
The baby, Mary and I
A year or two laid low
But never questioned why

I knew that God had said
This child was sent to save
Of the family I was head
Obeying the rules God gave

Nazareth was next in line
A place we soon called home
Some children that were mine
No longer needing to roam

Jesus in the temple courts
His depth of knowledge great
The wisdom of His thoughts
And reasoning quite straight

The Son of God a child
A miracle through and through
He came to save the defiled
Won’t you accept Him too
