God’s Eternal Purposes

“Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things which have not been done, Saying, ‘My purpose will be established, And I will accomplish all My good pleasure’; Calling a bird of prey from the east, The man of My purpose from a far country Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass. I have planned it, surely I will do it” (Isaiah 46:10-11).

We don’t have to look very far to be discouraged by world events. Every form of media reports what’s going on in the world and a steady diet of it can leave us feeling discouraged. If we lose sight of who God is and what He is going to accomplish; it’s very easy to fall into despair. However, the best place to turn for encouragement is the Bible. There are countless stories where God used hopeless situations and devastating circumstances to achieve His immediate and eternal purposes. God chose to save a people for Himself before the foundation of the world. The means by which He chose to do this was sending His sinless Son born under the law to die like an ordinary human. Jesus predicted His death, but his detractors didn’t understand Him, nor did His disciples. But God in His infinite wisdom somehow used the free actions of His creatures to move His plan of eternal redemption forward. God is sovereign even when it looks like everything is out of control.

“The LORD of hosts has sworn saying, “Surely, just as I have intended so it has happened, and just as I have planned so it will stand” (Isaiah 14:24).
