Geraniums Vs. the Christian Life

It has finally become warm enough to buy some flowers for our yard and deck. I love flowers. I am a compulsive flower planter. Sometimes when I am driving down the interstate and I see patches of weeds growing down the medians or alongside the road…I think…I should come back and throw out some flower seeds! I haven’t done that yet, but I do think about it every spring!

Today I am putting out some flowers. I think I must love geraniums because I buy them every year. I have even kept them through the winter so I wouldn’t have to buy so many each spring…but I don’t have the time or the space now to keep them through the winter so I just buy them a few at a time.

Today as I was appreciating their beauty…I thought how much a geranium is like the Christian life. One of the things I like about this flower is its hardiness. We can get some pretty strong winds in Illinois and the more fragile flowers get their delicate petals beat up by the harsh winds…but the geranium is hardy. It can take the wind.

Another thing I like is that one flower is in itself like a miniature bouquet. Each “geranium has several small flowers that will bud and open and that is what makes a “geranium.” It is something to look closely at the flower and you can see where only half of the buds have opened. The unopened ones are usually bent down…waiting their turn to open.

And finally, they come in such beautiful colors…God is So Creative! HE is limitless in HIS ability to create beauty in nature and it comes in such beautiful colors.
I see the Christian life like that…a believer must be hardy. Being a Christian is not for the delicate…those who are not willing to stand up and be counted as a follower of Christ. Just as the winds are hard on delicate petals…we have an enemy who would destroy our souls if he were able. We must trust in the Lord and allow HIM to strengthen us for the trials and attacks that will come our way.

Linda Kropp got saved at 14.  ” I always say that I didn’t get into a lot of trouble…because my mom wouldn’t let me!”  Linda was a was a missionary from 1973-1985 in the States, Europe and Asia, 9 of those in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Her husband was in the same mission, “Christ is the Answer” and they were married in Sri Lanka in 1980.

They have one daughter, Elisabeth, a son-in-law and a 4 yr. old granddaughter and another granddaughter due in July.  They attend College Avenue Baptist Church in Bloomington where they both are Sunday School teachers.  In September of 2009, Linda was praying about a way to help missions and she felt the Lord put on her heart to open a thrift store in Clinton, IL and give 100 % of the profits to missions, crisis pregnancy centers and food pantries. So she did.  They also have a weekly Bible study; a mentoring program for homeschooled and public school students. They work with DOVE (a domestic violence program), the IDHS in Lincoln, and the Red Cross Disaster Relief.  They also have had numerous people commit their lives to Christ since they opened. It has become a ministry…and that is just the ones who have gotten saved. Many people come in daily with prayer needs and they pray for them.
