Examine Yourself

Examine yourselves to see if your faith is genuine. Test yourselves. Surely you know that Jesus Christ is among you; if not, you have failed the test of genuine faith (2 Corinthians 13:5).

As a Christian, one of the hardest things I ever had to do was examine myself. I fear I will miss something vital to my walk with Christ. However, my fears begin to settle when I remember that I’m not alone. God’s Holy Spirit is with me to guide, convict and make sure that as I’m looking in the mirror of  my life that I’m not fooling myself.  For  James 1:23-24 says, “if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.”

There are times when I don’t read God’s Word or pray as often as I should and there are consequences. I start to see a pattern of behavior that is unbecoming as a Christian. I’m not as patient, kind, or understanding. I get frustrated quickly and I seek to withdraw from people because the irritation is just too much to handle. God’s Word and prayer is really my spiritual food. When I skip a meal or two, I get weak , cranky, and if the hunger persists, getting food becomes my primary focus. I rarely let my body run on fumes, so I plan to be more diligent in making sure my spirit is feed as well. This is just one of the ways I’ve examined myself and saw room for improvement.

Have you examined yourself lately? What did you find? What did Jesus prescribe as a remedy?

Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD (Lamentations 3:40).
