Evangelism By David Miller

Go Tell the World

For them whom specifically like to emphasize the new testament in their studies, this is definitely a “New Testament” word.  Evangelism is derived from the Greek word “euaggelistes”, referring to a “preacher of the gospel”.  In the case of our faith, the “gospel” has directly to do with Jesus being the Messiah, and why He has come.
The evangelist is listed among the fivefold ministry in Ephesians 4.  Why were each of these gifts given?   Ephesians 4:12 tells us evangelism, among the rest, was given for the perfecting of the saints (us whom follow His way as disciples), for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ (to which we belong).  We are told this is a gift intended for use until we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.  Therefore it is safe to conclude that we will have the evanglist until such time as our Lord and Savior returns for us.
When Paul charges Timothy before God to ministry, is he charging us each by example?  Did God not place this passage in the scriptures to be of exhortation toward us?  Understand that Paul would not be charging Timothy if he was already doing so.  Paul reminds Timothy that Christ shall come to judge the living and the dead.  It is in light of this judgment to come that Timothy is exhorted to watch in all things, endure afflictions, and to do the work of an evangelist.  Why?  Because , as 2 Timothy 4:3-4 tells us,  the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
In John 4:35, Jesus tells His disciples to lift their eyes, and look to the fields, for they are white to harvest.  Evangelism is not a title which belongs to a high profile person of clergical prestige and high social profile.  The evangelist does not require being a good or smooth speaker.  We are each exhorted to go out merely to the field that is “white to harvest” and to evangelize.  Are we followers of Jesus?  Do we carry the desires of Christ?  He is not willing that any should perish, but is rather willing that all should come to repentance.
It is typical that we refer to this congretation of believers as the “body of Christ”.  The number one built-in "Lift up your eyes ..."dynamic urge of any living entity is to produce more of its kind before it is dead.  If you uproot a dandelion before it flowers, it will put all  its efforts into producing a flower and bearing its seeds to propagate its species.  Likewise should it be natural and even the fulness and the joy to the believer to bring new life into the kingdom.  We are to watch in  all things and to do the work of an evangelist.  We are to reproduce seeds of faith in the lives of others that may grow up into everlasting life.
The time of greatest spiritual growth for me can be contributed to one thing:  It came at a time when I was very involved in the work of evangelism.  This very act of evangelism feeds our faith and keeps us on purpose.  How many parables must be told to exhort us to evangelism.  Revelation 4:11 says that for His pleasure we were created.  Regaining the lost souls is what our God felt was worth leaving all heaven and dying a bitter death for.  He told us of the lost sheep  and how he took more joy in the one that was missing than the 99 still present in the fold.  We are the pearl of great price to Him.  The lost man or woman is the missing coin that was swept and searched for diligently until it was found, then there was great rejoicing.  Our greatest purpose is met when we bring others to the kingdom.  Is there any  greater calling?
There is only one  thing we know of that makes the angelic armies of heaven rejoice.  We have heard the parable of the sower scattering the seed of the gospel.  Some fell on deaf ears.  Many seeds fell on the stony ground of trials and hardship in this world, and the seeds of the Gospel could not take root.  Some fell among the thorns and got choked out by the desires of this world.  Still, some fell on good ground.  We are not expected to gain multitudes, but we are expected to put out the seed of the gospel.  We are expected to evangelize.
Are you part of the church built on the rock of His faith?  If we choose to follow Him, He will make us fishers of men.

I am but a merest servant of our God. I have no credentials. There is no great “about the author” role nor portrait I can paint into words. No great contributions to society, no grand accomplishments to point to. I am nothing except what my God chooses to work through me. I am exceedingly blessed that He has chosen me to do anything through in or with. I am not one for another to look toward. I am merely a voice showing where truth has been trampled, and seeking to knock a few of the dead leaves off the path that others might pick up on the direction of the path. Occasionally my God is gracious to offer me glimpses of insight others may have missed, or to wipe away the dust that the depth of what He would reveal might be made manifest.
