Don’t Move the Ancient Landmark

“Do not move the ancient landmark
that your fathers have set.” (Pr 22:28)

What is an ancient landmark? And how could it possibly have any application to our lives? I’m glad you asked!

As I was reading this morning, this verse jumped out at me in light of the obvious moral and spiritual decline this nation (and the world) is going through. Hot topics of today would never have even been considered possible in our parents’ generation because they refused to move the ancient landmarks set or established at the beginning of time. Same-sex marriage. Transgenderism. Abortion. Homosexuality. Needless to say, those things which have been forbidden for centuries are now not only permissible but promoted as options for everyone.

“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and shrewd in their own sight!” (Is 20:20-21)

It’s doubtful the wisdom of Solomon would have even considered how far the ancient landmarks would eventually be moved. Those things which were subject to boundaries set by God are now dug up and either totally removed or relocated to a place that is acceptable to the majority — a majority of people who fail to regard the reason those landmarks or boundary stones were set to begin with.

When God spoke to man and set the laws for righteous life for His people to follow, He did so in order that they might live long and healthy lives. He wasn’t looking for ways to suppress individuality or to deny people their rights to uniquely express themselves, His laws were given for the benefit of His people because of His boundless love toward them! If only mankind understood just how vast that love is!

Open your browser and look at the latest news. Turn on the television to your favorite news broadcaster. Unfold the latest newspaper. Read the billboards on the roadside. It’s everywhere! Those ancient landmarks have become meaningless and have sparked full-blown storms of rebellion, anger, hatred, bias, bigotry — everything the holy boundaries set by God were purposed to guard against.

The creature believes it has become greater than the Creator. Righteousness, the ancient landmark, has been cast aside and rendered useless and old-fashioned. The pride of life shakes its fist in the face of God,

The voice of the Bride MUST be heard loud and clear by all who are in covenant relationship with the Bridegroom. Yet, the voice of the unrighteous seems to overpower the voice of the Bride. This should not be!

It’s time we re-established our personal surrender to the boundaries set by the Creator because of His love for His creation. It’s time the voice of the Bride overpowered the voice of those who revolt and demand change that opposes righteousness and is firmly set in direct opposition to the law of God.

As disciples of Christ — as living stones — we must turn our focus to making disciples. Teach the the difference between the holy and the profane (Eze 44:23). Instruct the youth, moms and dads, businesspeople, students, and all who influence this generation with the Word of God. Be examples of righteousness by denying our own personal desires and surrender to the will and purpose of God. In other words, we must be like Paul when he said, “I die daily…” (1 Cor 15:31).

Establish holiness as a lifestyle beginning with yourself. Demonstrate to others the joy of obedience and submission. Live your life in such a way that others see the blessing of a committed lifestyle, honoring God in all things, serving others by preferring them more than yourself, loving Him (not just acknowledging Him) and loving those around you enough to tell them the Truth. Become a mouthpiece for righteousness in this generation and refuse to move that ancient landmark set by our fathers in the faith as God Himself taught them the laws of life and godliness.

If we don’t take a stand now, there may not be another opportunity. It starts with me … it starts with you. Today.
