Destitute, Persecuted, and Mistreated

“Others were tortured and refused to be released, so that they might gain a better resurrection. Some faced jeers and flogging, while still others were chained and put in prison. They were stoned; they were sawed in two; they were put to death by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated-the world was not worthy of them.” (Heb 11:35-38)

Destitute, Persecuted and Mistreated

Stop and think about your life. Consider your testimony. Compare it to those of whom it was said, “the world was not worthy of them”.

This morning, as I was focusing on the persecuted church in my prayers, I began to think of those in our generation of whom these words might be said. Immediately some well-known Christian leaders came to mind, but as I considered their lives I realized that, although they are well-known and may have faced rejection and verbal abuses, most have never suffered persecution as many of our Christian brothers and sisters in other parts of the world.

I began to search the internet for articles about the persecuted church which led me to some articles describing the torture and other atrocities some of our precious brothers and sisters have endured because of their faith. An astounding fact seemed to resonate from each account of persecution… they remained strong in faith and never wavered. Wives were raped and beaten. Children were abused in front of them. Houses and churches and even entire villages were burned to the ground. They were tortured and some were even killed-“destitute, persecuted and mistreated”. These are they of whom it might be said, “the world was not worthy of them.”

Amen. I will pray with you. We watched “The Passion” earlier this week. I cried thinking about how what Jesus did eclipses whatever we think we’re going through. And now this reminds me that we have to ALWAYS pray for our fellow believers. Thank you for this reality check and reminder.
