City On a Hill

“You are the light of the world, a city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl, instead they put it on its stand and it gives light to everyone in the house.
Matthew 5:14,15

Once upon a time there was a young girl who got lost in the forest. She was trying to find her way home, but the path became dark and littered with all sorts of obstacles and she was so mixed up and turned around, she didn’t know which way to go.

As she stumbled through the darkness, she came upon a house. But there were no lights on in the house, it was dark and uninviting. She wanted to go in, find shelter from the cold, but when she knocked on the door, no one answered. She kept peering in the windows, but there was no sign of life, so she moved on.

The path she was traveling was quite dangerous, on either side were steep gullies and the poor girl would tumble down with each misplaced step. She was tired and weary when in the distance she saw a light. She headed towards it, eager for warmth and shelter. But as she approached, she realized that the house she was heading towards was on fire. It was a blaze of flames, willing to consume whatever was in its path. She could not even get close, the heat spewing out was scorching and blistering.

So she moved on, ready to give up … tired and discouraged that she’d ever find safety from the night. When she thought she could not take another step, she glanced up and directly ahead of her, she saw a light through the trees. She headed towards it, the warmth coming from the house was like a magnet drawing her to its radiant glow.

As she approached the front door, it swung open for her and through the entry she could see a fire glowing in the fireplace. Upon entering the front room, the warmth spread through her body from her head to her toes — it was so inviting, so comforting. The girl couldn’t imagine heading back out into the darkness … she knew she was home.

Father God, help me to be a warm glow to others. To show them the love and comfort that You have for them. Lord, I don’t want to be cold and dark, nor all-consuming and burning … but rather that warm glow that draws them near, to find the peace and comfort You have for them.

God’s Blessings upon You!
