Christmas Thoughts

Christmas Thoughts
by Jeanice McDade

I was thinking about our Christmas traditions and how it seems, even as we enjoy them, our traditions bless others too. As I walked down the street this evening, I noticed a family admiring their tree and other decorations. I realized that I was enjoying their handiwork also. In fact, one of the things that I enjoy most about the holiday season is taking a walk on a cold night and enjoying the lights and other decorations.

Light in the darkness … a good thought this Christmas season; that is what Christ is to us and what we are to the world. Our walk, the way we conduct ourselves as Christians, others are observe and from that they deduce who we are and what we stand for.. We are a “display” of God’s goodness and hope, His provision and life. I want to walk carefully in this darkness and allow God to shine through me, much like the Christmas lights shine in the darkness of night.

Another Christmas tradition that I enjoy is the sharing of baked goods. Yay!! Have you ever had a gift of Christmas goodies? Have you ever given one? Here again, I love receiving baked goods at Christmas but it is a wonderful tradition to share (especially with your children) as they are being prepared for someone else. The memory of putting the ingredients together, working and laughing together, enjoying the smells coming from the kitchen will remain in our minds for years to come. Giving the finished creation to someone completes the memory and certainly adds warmth to the holiday season.

And so it is in the life of a Christian. Many times we are called to work and toil for the sake of another and happily we do so, helping to build the Kingdom of God and rejoicing in the edification of His Body of believers.

My children and I have gone around the neighborhood on cold pre-Christmas nights and sang Christmas carols. We participate in the giving and sharing of Christmas cards and gifts. It is a lovely way to connect with and encourage those you care about. There are things about Christmas that may detract from the true meaning of Christmas, but if we keep balanced and focused on sincerity and loving one another, then perhaps the stresses and pressures of the commercial season will fall to the ground unnoticed.

It is a wonderful peace to be serving our God and each other, even in ways that aren’t generally recognizable or traditional. This Christmas season, as we begin our traditions, I want to look above and help to create memories that have an eternal significance. I want to truly be the light in the darkness, seeing His work manifest. I want our homes and hearts open to Him in ways that they haven’t been before. Another of His gifts to us is the privilege of being His Body, sharing and working together as He calls us, looking outside our families and reaching some of our larger family, as His children.

Have a blessed Christmas season!
