Christmas Devotion: One Small Child

As a way of saying “Thank You” for your partnership and friendship, Heart of God International is sharing with you a Christmas Meditation based on a different Christmas Carol each morning from now until Christmas Day.  We pray you will be blessed as you enjoy a few minutes of reflection during this busy season of celebration and remembrance! God bless you this Christmas!

The Fourth King

There is something about the nativity scene that seems to touch even the most hardened hearts. Is it because of a newborn baby? Is it because of the serene nighttime setting? What is it that will cause us to stop momentarily contemplate the scene that has mesmerized countless men, women and children during the past two millennia?

Many of the seasonal songs focus on one small child lying in a manger with mother and father, shepherds, wisemen, sheep, oxen and lambs gathered around. The story of the Gospel is often set to music, carefully crafted in a way that will give the listener a glimpse of the love the Father has for His people. The tender scene captures the tender compassion the Father has toward His creation.  Love. Mercy. Sacrifice. The greatest gift given to mankind in the form of “One Small Child”.

While the song by David Meece only touches on the majestic scene played out before those who witnessed the miracle birth, the lyrics manage to paint a portrait of a new mother giving praise for the Savior she just gave birth to. Don’t let the simplicity of the song allow you to overlook the greatness of this miracle of “one King bringing us life.”

One Small Child
by David Meece

One small child in a land of a thousand
One small dream of a Savior tonight
One small hand reaching out to the starlight
One small Savior of life

One king bringing his gold and riches
One king ruling an army of might
One king kneeling with incense and candlelight
One King bringing us life

See Him lying a cradle beneath Him
See Him smiling in the stall
See His mother praising His Father
See His tiny eyelids fall

See the shepherds kneeling before Him
See the kings on bended knee
Oh, See the mother praising the Father
See the Blessed Infant sleep

One small child in a land of a thousand
One small dream of a Savior tonight
One small hand reaching out to the starlight
One small Savior of life

Simply told. Simply profound. Did you catch it? Look once again at the second verse … there was a fourth King:  “One king bringing his gold and riches. One king ruling an army of might. One king kneeling with incense and candlelight. [And] One King bringing us life.”  There it is — the message of Christmas brought to us all through the “Fourth King”!

Lord, help us to meditate on all that this “Fourth King” has brought to mankind even while lying in a manger being adored by his parents and others who came to greet Him. Thank You for giving us such an incredible Gift–the One whom we worship and celebrate today and every day of the year, amen.

Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy
that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David
a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.
This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby
wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
Luke 2:10-12
