Are You an Ostrich or an Eagle?

According to what we hear on the news, America, and possibly a good portion of the world, is poised on the brink of financial disaster. Should the economy collapse, it has been predicted that we may find ourselves in a depression beyond anything anyone has ever experienced before.

America has been a leader among nations. We have been able to bless other countries around the world, from bringing relief in times of catastrophic disasters, to financial and military assistance when needed. It may be that soon we will no longer be in a position to come to anyone’s aid, nor they to ours.

Our great country was founded on Christian principles, and because of this, God has blessed us beyond measure. He has upheld us with His righteous right hand. But now, we as a nation, have turned on backs on Him, and spurned the very One who has given us the abundant living we take for granted.

There is no question but that God is trying to get our attention. It is in times of great need that people turn to Him for provision. We saw it during the great depression of the l930’s, and again during WWII, when churches were open twenty-four hours a day. It is during hard times that people will acknowledge the fact that there is a God; not just any god, but He, Himself, Jehovah-Jireh, our provider. It was during those difficult times that people saw the hand of God move mightily and were able to witness many miracles of His provision and protection. We need to remember that our God is the same yesterday, today, and forever; what He has done before, He will do again. In turn, what the people did before, they must do again.

In today’s world, it matters not whether one is poor, wealthy, or middle-class. Too many of us are enjoying luxuries that are often beyond our means to pay for, yet we feel a desperate need to possess them. We no longer try to keep up with the “Jones”; we have become the “Jones”. There is so much to be had, and it seems everyone must have it, whatever “it” is. We have lost all self-restraint in our spending and are drowning in a sea of glut. There are some of us who have made great efforts to live within our means. Unfortunately, we will suffer also, for as the Word tells us, “For He maketh His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth the rain on the just and unjust alike.”
Mat. 5: 45b KJV

Even with the unrelenting news we get daily through our newspapers and televisions, we still will not allow ourselves to believe what we hear. We hide our heads in the sand as ostriches, and refuse to see or accept the possibilities of what may become a reality. Only those who are suffering from lost jobs are beginning to understand that perhaps there is some truth in what is being predicted. .

What can God’s people do? We, ourselves, may not be able to provide a worldly solution, but we can, however, provide the only solution. We need, as a nation, to turn back to God; to our former belief, that in God we trust. He will be our firm foundation when the world around us seems to be crumbling.

Many preachers are saying that this may very well be prophetic fulfillment regarding the end of times. In Luke 18:8 KJV, Jesus asks “When the Son of man cometh, will He find faith upon the earth?” It appears that faith may be the key to His sustaining us. We need to hide the Word in our hearts. When things become difficult, it will be our refuse. If we don’t stand firm in our faith, we will fall. If we don’t trust God’s Word, we will fail. We must rise up on wings of eagles till we are soaring above whatever disasters may be coming our way.

This financial dilemma may be one of life’s giants, but God has provided, as He did with David, five smooth stones, faith, trust, hope, patience, and self-control. We must proclaim as Joshua and Caleb did when they gave testimony regarding the giants in the Promised Land, “Only rebel not ye against the Lord, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defense is departed from them, and the Lord is with us: fear them not.” Numbers 14: 9 KJV
