Be Ready to Defend

As the Western world continues to abandon biblical principles and thus influence the rest of the world, we must prepare ourselves to deal with a daunting biblical illiteracy among Christians, and non-Christians alike. We need to be well versed in what the Bible teaches, Christian history, and Christian apologetics. This is not so we will have “ammunition” to win an argument, but to counter lies, and other systems of belief with clarity and confidence.  It is important to know what we believe and why we believe it.  It is also important to ask questions to get people to think, rather than just telling them what to believe.

For instance, if a person says that the Bible has been changed so many times that what it claims cannot be true, a simple counter question is “have you read the Bible?” Usually, the person making this claim has not read it at all, or is just parroting what they heard someone else say. However, there are those who will have read the bible quite extensively and will point out what they feel are errors or contradictions in the text. This is the perfect time to use the knowledge of Christian history and apologetics. Will those we have had these kinds of conversations with agree with us immediately, sometimes, many times they won’t. But, what we will have accomplished is planting seeds of truth and trust Jesus to do the rest for He is the one who saves, we are just His messengers.

Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth (2 Timothy 2:25).
