Balaam, the Negotiator

Whenever we hear aboutdonkey Balaam from the Scripture, the usual punchline is:  “If God can use a donkey, He can use anybody!”  And though it’s certainly true that God has the ability to use any of us if He so chooses, I’m not sure this is actually the point being made in the Scripture.

When we reach Numbers 22, the new generation of Israel has spent almost 40 years in the wilderness–truly being raised as bedoins–and they’ve been betrayed by their kinfolk from Edom, Esau’s descendents.  Instead of allowing Israel to pass through their land, Edom comes out making a show of force, and telling Israel to go another way.  Though undoubtedly, Israel’s 600,000+ army could wipe the slate clean with Edom’s nomadic tribal force, Moshe makes the decision that honor trumps expediency … (click to read more)
