Holy, Holy, Holy

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, and His robe filled the temple. Seraphim were standing above Him; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.  And one called to another: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Hosts; is glory fills the whole earth. The foundations of the doorways shook at the sound of their voices, and the temple was filled with smoke. Then I said: Woe is me for I am ruined because I am a man of unclean lips and live among a people of unclean lips, and because my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of Hosts (Isaiah 6: 1-5).

Like Isaiah when confronted with God’s holiness, we become woefully undone. God’s perfect holiness magnifies our great wickedness. God is revealed in the Bible as light and truth (John 1:9, 14:6, 1 John 1:5). By His grace, we are privy to see and know our condition of sinfulness. Why did the angel take a coal from the altar and sanctify Isaiah? It is because the unholy cannot abide with that which is holy. Our sinfulness demands justice and we cannot stand before a holy God without it. That is why it was absolutely necessary for Jesus to come in the flesh to die and rise in victory over sin and death. He clothes us in His own righteousness because there is no holiness apart from God. We cannot gain it from good works or asceticism. The blood of Jesus purchased the righteousness of God for us. We will stand before God wearing Jesus’ righteousness not our own. For our righteousness is like filthy rags (2 Corinthians 5:21, Isaiah 64:6).
