12 Days of Unwrapping the Gift of You

Day 9: The Moment of Conception

Today’s Activity: My children love making wish lists around Christmas time. They roam through the toy catalogs circling everything that looks like fun, often choosing some toys that are just not appropriate for their age and skills. Let’s take that concept a little further. Sometimes our prayers and requests can become so specific that they limit God. Sometimes not getting what you have prayed for can be a blessing. Spend a few moments today thanking God for the doors He’s opened as well as the ones He allowed to close.

When you attempt to define yourself, you separate your life into finite areas: You become either the businesswoman or the homemaker, shy or outgoing, beautiful or average, poised or emotional. Once you begin to internalize these classifications about yourself, eventually you will begin to portray this identity to others. Over time it is easy to become locked into an identity that is too small for what God wants to do in your life. You are too diverse to allow yourself to become boxed into categories. What is behind the categorical doors you’ve closed in the past? Isn’t it time to become acquainted with you again?  ~Excerpt from Set Free to Live Free: Breaking Through the 7 Lies Women Tell Themselves © Revell

When did Esther become a queen? When did Deborah become a judge? When did Mary become the mother of Jesus? Each began her journey long before she ever stepped into her position of influence. Each woman set apart for a specific purpose at a specific time to speak a specific word and birth a specific outcome on behalf of an omnipresent God. I’m sure when Esther was playing as a child she never thought she would one day be queen, nor did Mary ever dream she would one day birth the impossible. Yet when their time came to step out of the familiar into their place of purpose, each pushed beyond all of the past insecurities attempting to cling to her and found a place of freedom to be who she was meant to be.

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations. – Jeremiah 1:5 NIV

All earthly life begins at the moment of conception, not at the moment of substantial growth or at the moment of the final birthing push. Just as physically you would never consider neglecting the promised baby growing inside of you, spiritually you must be able to see the conception of your destiny as a divine deposit from God. A deposit that will need to be protected in order for it to grow to its full potential; and, when the time is right, God will initiate the series of events that will push you out into your predestined place. You can no more dictate the time of this delivery than you could the timing of the birth of your children. Trust that the one orchestrating the growth and development of the seed planted also knows when it has adequately matured. His timing is always perfect.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the LORD. – Jeremiah 29:11-14 NIV

Daily Prayer:  Lord, thank you for depositing promises and desires in my heart. Help me to be still and know that you are in control. Sharpen my sensitivity to the guidance from your Spirit. Lead me as I push past the limits of my mind into the wide open space of your grace. Lord, who do you say that I am? Quicken my heart to be in alignment with your heart. Deepen my ability to love others the way you have loved me.  Here I am Lord, use me.
