12 Days of Unwrapping the Gift of You

Day 6: Emptied to be Filled

Today’s Activity: Begin today’s devotion with a time of relaxation. Prepare for yourself a warm mug of your favorite Christmas beverage. Sit with your Bible and read Psalm 139 in its entirety as you enjoy your drink.

The fragrance from the hot cocoa, hazelnut coffee, Earl Gray tea, mulled apple cider, or whatever beverage you just consumed, is probably still lingering in the air reminding you of the experience your taste buds just enjoyed. Sometimes it’s necessary to spend a moment tasting the goodness of God. Allow the words from Psalm 139 to leave the fragrance of His presence in the room where you are sitting. Don’t just take a quick sip; stay there long enough to be filled.

He must increase, but I must decrease. – John 3:30 KJV

Life has the ability to consume our every moment. Work, family, obligations, chores, and hobbies can leave us spending each day overcome with busyness. In the middle of the ruckus there is little time for rejuvenation. Slowly we tip ourselves over to pour out our last ounce of patience, love, service, and all sorts of good works until our reserve is empty. If we are not careful, that emptiness will remain long enough that dryness will set in and begin destroying the fruit in our life.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. – Galatians 5:22-23 NAS

Never fear the emptiness, but recognize it as a sign that you need to be filled. Drink deeply from the overflowing fountain of God’s abundance. Allow your daily times of communication to become your filling station. Whatever you lack, He has. Whatever you are in need of, He can supply. Open your mental doors to receive more of Him. He must increase within you.  As His word begins to fill your thoughts, fear, doubt and worry decreases until you begin to live free in Him.

Imagine a life with unlimited possibility, with no limitations. A life free from the gravitational pull of your own insecurities, fears and misconceptions. An open expanse of opportunities and experiences set before you, beckoning you to soar to new levels of fulfillment. An incredible overflowing display of endless possibilities extended upon a sea of grace. The only thing that can prevent you from walking into this new area is a lack of movement. The murky waters of uncertainty many not look strong enough to uphold you, but as you step out you will begin to feel the strength of God’s promises keeping you afloat. Open your mind wide and allow God to enlarge your perception of what is before you.  ~Excerpt from Set Free to Live Free: Breaking Through the 7 Lies Women Tell Themselves © Revell

Daily Prayer: Lord, I want more of you and less of me. Meet with me during my times of Bible reading. Reveal to me within the scriptures who you are and who I am in you. Open the doors of my understanding. Open the gates in my mind. Break every stronghold that tries to keep me from being filled. Remove the fear of being emptied. Fill me until I overflow, then show me where you would have me pour myself into for you.
