Give Yourself the Gift of Freedom!

12 Days of Unwrapping the Gift of You

Day 5: A Divine Exchange

The best part about getting a gift is that moment right before you strip off all the outer covering to reveal the gift within. In those few brief moments while you are holding the gift in your hand you can imagine it to be anything. The weight of the contents, the size of the box, the smells, and the sounds all come together to help you envision what is inside but still does not reveal all the possibilities. After years of Christmas gift giving, I have become very good at guessing if a box contains a sweater, a robe, or a shirt. But even when I guess the item correctly it is impossible to determine the specifics like color and texture. There is always an element of surprise and that is what makes every gift exciting!

If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him! – Matthew 7:11 ESV

Today’s Activity: Find a gift under your Christmas tree with your name on it. Hold it and try to guess what is inside. Then get your Bible and hold it in your hands. How is it similar to the gift you were just holding? Spend some time contemplating the countless promises and possibilities inside of this amazing gift you now hold.

Being on the precipice of discovery is an exciting place to stand, halfway between your current reality and your destiny. It is the mount of personal transformation, where God reveals your new name in Christ. This place of newness with God is a gift to every believer. As you accept the finished work of the cross, a divine exchange occurs. Jesus stripped away the greatness of His deity to bear your sins and in return beckons you to strip away your preconceived life script to be enlightened by His Spirit. Each gift needs to be unwrapped in order to complete this divine exchange. Receiving all Christ died to give you requires reckless abandon, a complete wholehearted trust and abandonment in His love.

We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne. – Hebrews 12:2 NLT

We each have our expectations of when we would like to see God do those things we have asked of Him, but God also has a day He has purposed for those events. He does not tell us when that day will be, nor does He give us any indication how long we will have to wait for them. All we can do during these moments is take a stand of faith that God loves us and is working all things out for our good, even during the times when it seems as if He has said no to our requests. Sometimes it’s not really a “no” but a “not right now, be patient and wait on my timing.”

God is not limited by times or dates. With Him one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years are like one day (see 2 Peter 3:8). We often get so accustomed to waiting on God that we forget that God can act suddenly. Learning how to wait with eager anticipation allows you to open your mind to the possibility of having a “suddenly” moment. Your anticipation of seeing God move is your proclamation that with God all things are possible.  ~Excerpt from Set Free to Live Free: Breaking Through the 7 Lies Women Tell Themselves © Revell 2011

Daily Prayer: Lord, forgive me for neglecting the gift of your Living Word. With open hands I receive all Jesus died for me to have and I release to you all that I hold dear. Help me to trust your timing in all things concerning me. May I daily cling to nothing but your love for me and rest in the security of who you are.
