12 Days of Unwrapping the Gift of You

Day 4: A Secure Place

Christmas lights have the ability to evoke fond childhood memories of hot cocoa and crisp wintery days, or they can bring to mind the impossible task of losing a tangled mess. Each year as I bring down the Christmas decorations, I’m always apprehensive about the state of our Christmas lights. Their condition will either having me quickly smiling at a well-lit tree or frowning at my predicament. But just getting all the lights free is not enough. Even after all the lights have been untwined it’s always necessary to check for any bulbs that are no longer shining brightly. Their beauty and brilliance is best seen when they dispel the darkness with an effervescent glow. Light is only light when it’s illuminating its surroundings.

Life is a canvas, an open field on which to create and dream. Each person is designed to be a unique work of art breathed into being by the Master Creator. However, each person has a similar purpose: to bring glory and praise to the Creator. Art should not be hidden but on display to experience and enjoy. Have you noticed that fine art is typically placed under a spotlight? How better to see the fine details stroked into existence behind the central scene? What better way to see the signature of the artist on the work signifying his approval of the finished product? You are a work in progress that God wants to illuminate.  ~Excerpt from Set Free to Live Free: Breaking Through the 7 Lies Women Tell Themselves © Revell 2011

What happened? How do lights lose their ability to shine? Sometimes, while sitting in storage waiting on the next opportunity to shine, the light may lose its connection to the source of its power. It’s comfortable in its place of security and is oblivious to the external forces at work daily causing it to ultimately disconnect. This disconnection is detrimental to the longevity, effectiveness and power of the light, but thankfully restoration is possible.

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” – John 8:12 NIV

A single light can indeed glow, but a string of multi-colored lights has the ability to cascade its reflection into a magnificent rainbow of promise. All attached to a single source, yet reflecting the portion of the Light given to it. Each individually unique and collectively powerful in their display of purposeful union.

Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5 NLT

Just like that mass of tangled Christmas lights, sometimes our lives may seem to be an unresolved mess. Void of light due to the overwhelming darkness of doubt, fear, unbelief, hope deferred, and uncontrolled busyness; until our time of destiny arrives and we are taken out of the box of our familiarity to a place of renewed faith. There we find our desperate need to be re-connected to the Light. In that place of desperation we wholly abandon our need for independence and realize the beauty of being held tightly.

Daily Prayer: Lord, hold me close to you. Allow me to reconnect to the joy of my salvation. Help me to remember the power of your love. Renew me. Show me where I’ve disconnected from the source of your endless supply. Move me back into position. I want to shine brightly the beauty of your Light in me. I am desperate for more of you.

Today’s Activity: Wrap your arms around yourself and give yourself a big hug from Jesus. That’s just how close He is at any given moment. Allow Him to draw you close and you listen to today’s worship selection.
