Give Yourself the Gift of Freedom!

12 Days of Unwrapping the Gift of You

Day 2: Return to Sender

Have you ever received a package you were not expecting? You open the front door to find a brown box on the front steps. Lifting it to your gaze you scan the label to see who sent this package. Where did it come from? Is this the correct address or did someone make a mistake? In essence you want to know if you should open it or if it needs to be returned to the sender.

Sitting at the open door of your heart today is an invitation to be free. God has packaged your past into His box of grace and wrapped it in His love. Shame, fear, insecurity, doubt and unbelief all have a place within this box. Also inside this box are those things others use to define you and past painful relationships. This package houses everything the enemy has used to keep you feeling overwhelmed and defeated. For some this may be a small dainty box and for others it may require a U-Haul, but regardless of the size it can be returned. God has appointed these 12 days as a time for you to load up your box and return it; not to the sender, but to the cross.

His love for you is indescribable. It goes beyond all you can imagine. There is nothing that can stand between you and God’s love. Not even the life of His only Son, Jesus. Every barrier that has formed, every sin you have committed, every mistake you have made, every wall you have erected can become obsolete under the liberating flow of God’s grace and love. Allow God an unobstructed view into your feelings. Become transparent with the one who is able to breathe life into your relationships. One moment of transparency can heal a lifetime of pain. ~Excerpt from Set Free to Live Free: Breaking Through the 7 Lies Women Tell Themselves © Revell 2011

Haven’t you held on to it long enough? Is it serving a purpose in your life? Has the familiarity of your box become comfortable? Was it ever really yours to begin with? If you look closely you will see that it does not have your name on the label. This box was never supposed to make it inside your heart. It was never supposed to make it past the gates of God’s mercy. It was never supposed to be delivered to you but to Jesus. With hands outstretched He stand awaiting the opportunity to receive what has been weighing you down. He has been anticipating the day when you would return this unwanted package.

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30 NLT

Today’s Activity: Write down all the things you feel weigh you down, all your heavy burdens (past or present). Find a small Christmas box and place your pages inside. Seal the box. Address it to Jesus and place it under your Christmas tree as a physical reminder that you are leaving it at the cross.

With all that weighed you down packaged and delivered at the feet of Jesus, what do you now have room to receive? What gifts have God tucked away inside of you that have been obscured by the clutter? Let God tidy up your heart this Christmas. Give Him some time alone with you today to sweep out those hidden places where the dust of apathy sits and the rust of pride tries to deceive you. Allow Him the freedom to rearrange the interior design of your priorities, dreams, and goals. Take a deep breath. Smell the fragrance of the fire He is kindling in your heart. Sit with Him by the fire of renewed relationship as He beings this process of unwrapping the gift of you.

I will give them a heart to know Me, for I am the LORD; and they will be My people, and I will be their God, for they will return to Me with their whole heart. – Jeremiah 24:7 NAS

Daily Prayer: Lord, the burden of carrying around my box is exhausting me. I’m tired of holding on to the things Jesus wants to relieve me of. Help me lay it all down at the foot of the cross. Lord, I need your help to let go of the things the enemy is trying to wrongly deliver into my mind and heart. Help me to recognize the truth and to quickly distinguish it from the lies. With open hands I release my box to you, God, and I thank you for loving me enough to take it.
